       Overgrowth & Understory
Cougar Mt. Outdoor Sculpture Art Exhibit     Seattle, WA     2010

    "THIS ONE BOX"
Boxes come in all sizes, defined by their logical boundaries: H x L x D. Boxes contain belongings and sometimes just “stuff”; furthermore they are designed for shipping and storage. They may protect a dowry, or artifacts, remnants from one's personal past, from elders and ancestors, or they might yield a precious treasure. A box possibly could hold love letters or sad stories, perhaps books, and just maybe even shelters something that should be kept locked away for good? But what if the space in the box is filled with no more than one’s thoughts, with one’s memories? Does it then still have those logical boundaries? Will any amount of memories ever fill the box to the rim? What is in your own box?
THIS ONE BOX was recently returned to the owner and as soon as I heard what happened to it over the past 32 years, I became inspired and compelled to give it one more purpose. Wrapping salvaged rope from a decommissioned vessel around this special box and its memories seems to keep it all once more in a secure place. My intentions to convey this is mirrored through the hand written words, which could become a catalyst for the viewer to reflect on their own past, their heritage, their memories, their goals and passion.
